Axiros' Axess server is a highly centralized system, which acts as a policy decision platform, enforcing policies based on AAA or content changes highly dynamically on policy enforcement units (access gateways) out in the field.
Gateways should NOT manage user state, as in pure RADIUS style setups, with RADIUS clients on the gateways (heavy clients).
Reason: RADIUS is NOT a policy enforcement but a AAA protocol which is supposed to be used in the backend. Thus one should not try to push the business logic for a complete user session within one initial RADIUS AAA reply to the gateway or try to control the user sessions via RADIUS accounting replies.
With Axess user state is kept centrally. Layer 2 and layer 3 relevant necessary state changes and volume accounting infos are communicated to and from the gateways, exclusively.
Axess was designed to support any hardware at a WiFi hotspot which can dynamically enforce layer 2 or layer 3 source related policies differently. The merging of layer 2/3 details with the user and his session is done on the central server, not on the gateway. Therefore, our customer's setups are not dependent on application layer gateway features, they do not have to change or reconfigure their gateways in the field to realize new business models.

"Sandbox" principle: Every WISP, company and customer seems to have its own system with all its branding and managing functions. In turn, every WISP can create own WISPs, companies and customer branches without lack of security.
At the left side you can see a WISP with different hotspots. It can offer settings for AAA, content and hardware. The system grows organically in a hierarchical structure and remains easy to handle.
The fine grained user, role and rights assignment is available on all client levels. The logistic efforts are optimized. If a hotspot does not require specific settings, it automatically inherits the standard settings, only specific settings have to be managed actively.
