Putting the IoT in LAS

Lastweek, we jetted off to sunny Las Vegas to join the most amazing innovators in the world at the 2015 CONNECTION™ Summit at CES, hosted by Parks Associates. With so many brilliant displays of the future all under one roof, it was hard not to dream about the possibilities of a connected life made possible by the Smart Home and Internet of Things.

Fortunately, our friends at Parks asked us to join them for a session on the Smart Home, where we were able to shed some additional light on what may be possible in the not-so-distant future.

Vice President Peter LeBlanc took the stage with several other panelists from Qualcomm, Lowes, Alarm.com, Ayla Network to discuss “Platforms, Devices, & Interoperability in the Smart Home.”

Speaking to a room packed with 700+ attendees, the panel discussed what the industry can do to improve interoperability between platforms to speed deployment of Smart Home devices. As an early adopter of industry standards such as TR-069, Axiros presented its position and weighed in on topics for device management and provisioning. An important point brought up repeatedly was that the industry needs to address technology consolidation and standardization in order to improve interoperability between manufacturers. The discussion turned to the Broadband Forum and the future of its role in standardization efforts around the Smart Home.

Much of the debate centered around whom will drive the market for Smart Home deployments: service providers (e.g. Verizon, Comcast), application provider/retailers (e.g. Lowes) or device manufactures (e.g. Apple).

Axiros also stressed how IoT will impact the Smart Home and what role network and device management will play on future success. Without management, provisioning and interoperability, failure is all but certain.

In the end, everyone walked away with the understanding that although we have made great progress, there is much to be done in order to achieve mass-market success. We are well on our way and future CONNECTIONS™ events will show much progress!

Thank you to all who stopped by to say hello while at the show! We are proud to have been a sponsor of CONNECTIONS™ Summit at CES 2015 and look forward to seeing you at future events.
