What is DOCSIS Proactive Network Maintenance

DOCSIS Proactive Network Maintenance (PNM)

DOCSIS Proactive Network Maintenance (PNM) is a cable modem management technique that uses various Internet of Things (IoT) devices to proactively monitor and manage the cable network. The devices used in PNM can include but are not limited to: cable modems, set-top boxes, WiFi routers, and other connected devices. By collecting data from these devices, operators can detect issues on the network before they become problems for customers. In addition, PNM can help operators to improve network performance by identifying and addressing potential issues before they cause service disruptions. As the use of IoT devices continues to grow, so too will the role of PNM in cable networks.

DOCSIS Proactive Network Maintenance (PNM) is a relatively well known DOCSIS feature, based and built on DOCSIS pre-equalization. Pre-equaliztion is a feature available to DOCSIS cable modems invented with DOCSIS 1.1 standard and improved with DOCSIS 2.0 and DOCSIS 3.1. This feature set is based on equalizer taps available in the cable modem. Equalizer taps do delay RF frequencies. Each unit of delay is called a tap.

Benefits

  • PNM is a proactive approach to cable operator plant maintenance

  • PNM uses cable modems and CMTS as test probes

  • PNM locates up- and downstrream impairments

  • In an ideal scenario PNM identifies impairments before they impact the customer

How Does PNM Work?

  • Frequent and continuous data collection from CMTS and modems via SNMP

  • Frequent monitoring of modems in target

  • Analysis of distortion signatures

  • Issue evaluation and classification

  • Calculations of distances to reflection points

  • Plot modems on a map — visual representations of known issues.

The Advantage Of DOCSIS
PNM?

DOCSIS Proactive Network Maintenance is a technology that helps Internet service providers manage the growing number of IoT devices on their networks. By providing visibility into the devices on the network and their activity, DOCSIS Proactive Network Maintenance helps ISPs to identify and resolve problems before they cause customer disruptions. For example, if an IoT device is consuming excessive bandwidth or generating excessive traffic, DOCSIS Proactive Network Maintenance can help the ISP to detect the issue and take corrective action.

In addition, DOCSIS Proactive Network Maintenance can also help ISPs to manage firmware upgrades and security patches for IoT devices, ensuring that the devices are always up-to-date and secure. As the number of IoT devices continues to grow, DOCSIS Proactive Network Maintenance will become an increasingly important tool for ISPs.

What Problem Does PNM
Solve?

Preventative actions are typically less expensive than dealing with issues once they arise. Every year, troubleshooting residential Wi-Fi problems consumes a significant amount of resources. An effective Proactive Network Maintenance program not only lowers troubleshooting costs but also standardizes data collection procedures, automates remote problem solving, and provides an enormous amount of actionable network information. But most significantly, it helps to build public confidence in cable service providers' dependability - without which no other metric is as important.

FAQ | Proactive Network Maintenance

What is proactive network maintenance?

PNM is a revolutionary concept. Proactive maintenance, unlike predictive or preventative maintenance, depends on a continuous and rigorous examination of the network looking for causes of failure before they happen rather than treating network failures as routine.

What are the benefits of PNM?

PNM reduces maintenance expenditures by first discovering the presence of RF impairments, but it also determines whether the impairment originates in-home or outside the plant. It links MAC addresses to the malfunctioning cable modems and pinpoints them on a business's geo-location. Now technicians can be directed to the problem area for troubleshooting.

What problem does PNM solve?

An effective PNM program not only lowers troubleshooting costs, but it also standardizes the data collection process, automates remote problem solving, and provides an unrivalled amount of actionable network information. But more significantly, it helps to strengthen the public's confidence in cable provider services.
